The Presentation
Applaud yourself for successfully completing the first three components of your Senior Capstone Project. You have researched a topic of interest and written an in-depth Research Paper. You worked and produced a related Product, and compiled a professional Portfolio documenting your journey. Now, you are ready to celebrate your accomplishments and share your discoveries with your Judges at the Presentation.
Presentation Requirements
Presentation Timing & Focus
- The presentation will be timed. It must be at least 5 minutes and not exceed 10 minutes. Points will be deducted from your grade if it is too short or too long. Rehearse your presentation to make sure you are staying within the time parameters.
- Your presentation should focus on your career field, but be sure to include information about your mentor (if you job shadowed), training/education needed to gain entry into your career field, your product, and related career opportunities.
- There are several samples videos from previous Capstone Project presentations embedded at the bottom of this page.
Create an outline for your presentation
- Your outline (possibly a PowerPoint or, at least, a written list) will provide you with a visual progression of what you want to say. The outline will enable you to keep your Presentation focused and organized as well as lessen any apprehension you may have about talking in front of people.
- Optional: Create note cards
- Place only key words or phrases on your note cards, just enough to jog your memory about what you want to say next.
- Note: Avoid placing complete sentences or jamming too much information on your note cards since this may lead you down a major pitfall in presenting: reading rather than telling.
Dress
- Your attire for should complement your presentation rather than become a distraction that takes valuable points away from your score.
- Use the following recommendations in making your decision about what to wear.
- Guys might wear collared shirts, dress pants, or khakis (a sport coat or suit, if you prefer)
- Girls might wear an appropriate dress, a skirt, or dress pants and a conservative top or jacket (a suit, if you prefer)
- It is appropriate to wear uniforms worn in the career you are researching (i.e. police uniform, medical scrubs, etc.)
- Hair: Wear your hair in a manner that will allow you to keep eye contact with your Judges. Avoid playing with your hair during the presentation.
- At the very least, wear your best for your presentation. You want to show the Judges that you are taking the presentation seriously.
Essential delivery components - maintain . . .
- Eye Contact with your Judges - avoid turning your back to them
- Body Composure - avoid leaning on the podium – stand with confidence
- Vocal Expression - moderate your speech - neither too low/too high/too fast
- Personal Expression - It’s OK to be enthusiastic! In fact, allowing your passion about your project to show will go a long way in impressing the Judges and in making a dynamic presentation!
Students will receive an individual appointment for their presentation. Presentations will be scheduled during the following weeks:
- Fall 2019 - November 11-15, 2019
- Spring 2020 - April 20-24, 2020
Any student who misses the Presentation Appointment and does not present an excuse for the absence, will result in penalty on the final grade. It is also the student's responsibility to schedule a make-up appointment in the Counseling Office if it is missed.
