What is the Capstone Project?
State Initiative:
The career-related Capstone Project is an initiative put forth by the State of Georgia to provide students with an education which leads them to college and career readiness. The project will allow students to showcase their talents as they explore a career of personal interest. It fosters lifetime interests and learning habits while providing students with a sense of accomplishment. It combines academic, career, and community components intended to challenge one’s ability, stretch one’s limitations, and celebrate one’s individuality.
Required Project:
The Capstone Project is a graduation requirement for all high school students. At North Paulding High, students will complete the Capstone Project when they are enrolled in one of the following English courses: Advanced Composition, British Lit, Honors British Lit, or AP Literature. The project is embedded in the class and will count as a percentage of the English course grade. If a student is completing the equivalent of the identified English courses listed above through Dual Enrollment, he or she is exempt from completing the Capstone Project.
Project Goals:
*To give students the opportunity to apply knowledge in a variety of areas
*To link knowledge from courses to application through a project
*To prepare students for life after high school
*To strengthen students’ communication skills
*To allow students the opportunity to research an area of interest
*To give students the opportunity in serve in the community
Basic Component Overview:
Project Proposal: Through the fourth English class, students will choose a career area of interest to research. Working closely with the teacher, students will narrow their topic of research and submit a proposal.
Research Paper: Students will write a research paper on their chosen topic and related career opportunities. The paper, itself, will count as one summative grade in the fourth English class.
Product: During the Capstone presentation, the student will need to present a “product.” The product may be an actual physical product, a performance, a demonstration, or a service. Your product must be related to your research. Students are not required to spend money to complete the Capstone Project.
Portfolio: The purpose of the portfolio is to document the entire Capstone Project process from inception to completion. It will contain the student resume, project proposal, and research paper. The portfolio must be collected into one notebook, binder, folder, etc.
Presentation: The final element of the Capstone Project is the presentation. Students will engage in a formal presentation of no less than 5 minutes and no more than 10 minutes in length. Students must demonstrate proficient speaking skills and the ability to communicate coherently as they present their project. The presentation must be accompanied by a product (see above).
